Excellence in Teaching Nominee

Margaret Kobewka, a teacher at the Argyll Centre Edmonton campus, has been nominated for an Excellence in Teaching Award. Marge establishes exemplary connections with her students and their families. She has a passion for literacy learning and has completed Balanced Literacy training for both Division One and Division two. Marge takes every opportunity to help students develop a love of reading and writing by working together with parents and their children.

As part of her Balanced Literacy training Marge designed and implemented parent and student workshops where she conducted demonstration lessons that modeled literacy strategies. Using synchronous learning technology she has implemented writing workshops which enabled students around the province to write and share their work on line. This year students involved in her weekly writers’ workshop, Literacy Lift Off, developed a website where students posted their writing and received feedback from peers.

Marge’s thorough knowledge of the grade one to six curriculum enhances her ability to understand her students’ needs and create individualized programs. Her passion for literacy learning is fueled by her desire to see students develop their critical thinking skills. As a reflective teacher Marge constantly adapts her practices to support the educational choices of the families she facilitates
