Alberta Education has launched a new online student learning tool

This new online tool replaces the printed Curriculum Handbooks for Parents and Curriculum Summaries. Putting this information online means you can get it more easily and no longer need to request the books from the school or the government.

Supplemental Funding

***For the 2013-14 school year, Supplemental Funding will no longer be offered for High School credits.

In order to continue to offer a higher level of instruction, we have been seeking ways in which we can continue to support the strong technology infrastructure we currently have in place. Because we rely on sophisticated technologies (hardware, software - licensing in particular, and 2 full time technical analysts who provide technical support) to an extent that far surpasses all other schools, our funding model needs to take into account costs that simply aren't incurred by other bricks and mortar schools, and/or boards who offer primarily paper based materials. Argyll is recognized as being a provider of the best online delivery model and a centre of excellence.

At the elementary and junior high levels, we reduce the supplemental funding by $300 to help offset some of these costs. This has not applied to high school students in the past.

The supplemental funding initially came into play when most of our students were using paper-based materials for instruction and learning. A large majority of our resources have since gone into the development of strong asynchronous online courses, complemented by live direct instruction through the virtual class. We believe, and know from the research, that our work is leading to higher levels of learning for our students, in addition to higher completion rates for our high school students.

It is our belief (and hope) that our families will continue to choose Argyll because of the high level of service and support we provide to our students and families. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and your family at Argyll.

Why Argyll?

Argyll Centre is a distributed learning school, offering multiple channels of learning and teaching through a variety of delivery formats and mediums that enable students, teachers and course content to interact across distance. Distributed learning connects students with teachers, often with a strong parent-teacher partnership, providing choice, flexibility, and authentic learning experiences. At Argyll, the potential exists through 21st century technologies and literacies, to build highly personalized, engaging learning opportunities for student success, as well as expanding teacher expertise to critically influence and support student learning.

Argyll Centre is attracting students from all over Alberta, other provinces in Canada and other countries! Students are welcome to register from anywhere. See details for registration under our registration tab if you are registering from outside Alberta.

This is what we are learning from our returning parents and students and from the surveys that our new registrants are completing after registration.

Other comments shared with us and we are sharing with you!

  • Ability to enrol in a Registered Apprenticeship program
  • teachers and administrators who are knowledgeable and seem well-informed
  • easy to reach staff; strong background in teaching special needs students
  • The Open House demonstrated how respected and appreciated the school is by both students and parents. It also demonstrated a progressive view of education as being a fluid and dynamic rather than didactic and linear process, which is aligned with my own philosophy.
  • My child is not experiencing bullying in this safe and caring learning environment
  • The Natural Learning Community principles support our approach to home education.
  • Access to a library of teacher - directed resources so that I could remained aligned with APS but teach my children at home their own pace, in a parent-directed format.
  • Respect for all faiths
  • The onsite gym and art time in Edmonton every Friday is a huge plus.
  • I look forward to recommending Argyll to more musical families so they too can enjoy the incredible flexibility and excellent educational opportunities.
